When my family and friends go fishing, to the beach, the pool, or on the boat we have perfected The BIG SANDWICH. I announce loudly for everyone to hear that I, me, the father and leader of this crew am about to make “THE BIG SANDWICH”. I make this announcement kind of like the royal court announces the arrival of the King….It is a sight to behold…..think the “Coming to America” wedding and the “Let’s get Ready to Rumble” guy combined. I make it a really big deal….it is not warranted….but…..my kids and I think it is funny….whatever. This is not as much a recipe as it is an idea to get you and your crew fed with minimal work and minimal waste. So….LLLLLet’s Get Ready to SANDO!!!!
I used to make everyone a separate sandwich, take separate orders, and wrap them in separate packages. Take a sharpie….write each name on the package, place them all in a big zip-lock…..place in the cooler….and hit the road. Later that day I would inevitably have once bitten soggy sandwiches floating in the ice water. Someone would take a sando with someone else’s name….I would work hard to have an unhappy bunch of kids with a messy cooler.
And then I saw the light. I was on a big fishing trip with a few other families and saw a bunch of kids walking around with little finger sandwiches. These sandwiches were small enough that even the “least hungry” kid could finish one in a sitting. But….they were big enough that an adult wouldn’t shy away from eating two or three and being totally satisfied. I asked the leader of their rowdy team how they came to such a culinary epiphany….and it all came to be. THE BIG SANDWICH. Feel free to use any deli meats and toppings you want. Again, this is not really a recipe, it is an idea that works like a charm for us. Check the pics above and follow the few suggestions below and make it your own. Thanks and good luck! Also…make it a big deal…….it’s pretty fun.
So, you just have to follow a few rules.
- Package of Hawaiian Sweet Rolls
- Remove from package, cut the whole thing in half (top half and bottom half)
- Toast to keep them from getting soggy
- Dress your BIG SANDWICH!
- Cut your BIG SANDWICH!
- Put back in cardboard tray and back in bag…and tie up.
Good luck, have fun, and change it up! Chicken salad, tuna, roast beef and swiss…..it all works.
